Plot

In the close-knit town of Rockridge, local news doesn't travel by printed press, but rather the telephone party wire, an informal yet powerful medium of communication connecting the lives of the town's residents. The buzz of conversation and speculation is set alight when Matthew Putnam, the town's prodigal son and proprietor of the local dairy, returns. As an eligible bachelor, he's the dream son-in-law for many mothers with single daughters. However, Matthew's heart only beats for Marge Oliver, a long-time friend whom he proposes to, adding yet another spark to the town's chatter. But the party wire doesn't just transmit joyous news. It also serves as a breeding ground for malicious gossip. The town's leading gossipmonger, Mathilda Sherman, overhears and misconstrues a conversation between Marge's father and a man named Roy Daniels, who made a sudden, unexplained departure from Rockridge. The twisted interpretation of the call suggests that Marge was left in a compromising situation by Roy, a rumor that rapidly spreads like wildfire across the party wire. The town's gossip takes a toll on Marge, who wonders if Matthew, aware of the rumors, will still want to marry her. A series of unfortunate circumstances, beyond Matthew's control, lead to a tragedy within the Oliver family, leaving the town in shock. Determined to right the wrongs of Rockridge and the destructive power of the party wire, Matthew, with some assistance from his Aunt Nettie, takes it upon himself to challenge the town's reliance on gossip, and restore truth and dignity to the people he cares about. 'Party Wire' is a compelling exploration of the power of words, the dangerous allure of gossip, and the courage it takes to defy the status quo in the pursuit of truth.
