Parineeta (2005)

In the pulsating heart of 1962 Calcutta, three families, bound by proximity and fate, navigate the turbid waters of life in an upper middle-class enclave. The first family comprises of Gurcharan, a retired gentleman living in a grand Haveli (mansion) with his wife and two radiant daughters, Lolita and Koyal. Struggling to find work, Gurcharan mortgages his home to his neighbor, Navinchandra Roy, hoping to marry off his daughters within his means. The second household is the abode of Charu Sharma, a young woman living with her brother and sister-in-law, her only hope resting on her affluent brother, Girish, who resides in Britain. The last family is the Roys - Navinchandra, a shrewd businessman who weighs every move against potential profit, his son, Shekhar, whom he grooms as his successor, and his devout, demure wife. When Navin becomes aware of Gurcharan's precarious position, he offers Lolita a job, a lifeline for the family's survival. Sparks fly between Lolita and Shekhar, but Navin disapproves, having grander matrimonial plans for his son with Gayetri Tatya, the daughter of a wealthy associate. The tranquil neighborhood is thrown into turmoil when Girish returns home, drawn to Lolita and wishing to marry her. Simultaneously, Lolita discovers Navin's plan to evict her family to recover his loan, intending to erect a five-star hotel in its place. Suddenly, the clock is ticking for Lolita to find a way for her father to repay Navin. But how can Gurcharan come up with 1.50 lakhs in such a short time? The specter of destitution looms large, threatening to uproot the family from their cherished home and thrust them into a life of hardship.
