In an era of patriotism and duty, Max Wharton, a distinguished editor of the New York Bulletin, and his wife Paula - a novelist turned successful screenwriter - stand on the precipice of middle age, their names synonymous with fame and triumph in their respective fields. Yet, to the shock of the newspaper's demanding Board of Directors led by the obstinate owner Robert Drexel Gow, Max, despite his advancing years, decides to enlist in the army amid World War II. This decision is not only against the desires of the board but also threatens the stability of the Bulletin, with Max's replacement proving less than satisfactory. Undeterred by Gow's fury and threats to sell the newspaper, Max leaves behind his illustrious career and heads for Officer's Candidate School in sunny Florida. In a show of unwavering support and love, Paula, affectionately known as Paulie, puts her movie script on hold to follow Max, opting for a humble bungalow near the barracks over her comfortable urban life. Their new world is far from glamorous, filled with the quirks of army life and a menagerie of fellow army wives in the same complex. As Paulie adapts to her new surroundings, complete with temperamental lights, a noisy refrigerator, and a host of uninvited insects, Max grapples with the rigors of military education. His struggle to memorize the scientific and technical curriculum is a far cry from his editorial duties, and his age seems to be a barrier in a world dominated by young cadets. The looming fear of failure and the constant tug of his former life at the Bulletin threaten to derail his progress. With the Bulletin on the brink of being sold and Max's graduation and subsequent deployment looming, Paulie takes it upon herself to ensure Max's concentration remains undivided. In an environment that tests their resilience, the Whartons navigate the choppy waters of duty, ambition, and love, embarking on a journey that will redefine their lives.
