Plot

In the turmoil of 1989 South Africa, against the backdrop of escalating conflict between political factions in Lamontville, we meet 16-year-old Otelo Buthelezi and his tight-knit group of friends. The boys, living in a world ravaged by political violence, stumble upon an enchanting escape when they are invited to the beach house of Tau Modise, stepping into a realm of crashing waves and sun-kissed shores - a stark contrast to their strife-ridden township. Caught in the captivating allure of the ocean, Otelo's extraordinary talent for surfing quickly becomes evident. His natural aptitude for carving through the water makes him the focus of an older white man, Kurt Struely, who sees in the boys an untapped potential and introduces them to the thrilling world of professional surfing. With the promise of fame, fortune, and an escape from their harsh reality, the boys, under Struely's guidance, become adept surfers, with Otelo outshining them all. However, the glory of their newfound passion soon gives way to jealousy and resentment, especially from Tau, who struggles to accept Otelo's superior talent. Tensions flare further when Dezi, New Year's younger sister, is smitten by Otelo, adding fuel to the already simmering rivalry. Meanwhile, a tragic turn of events sees Otelo's younger brother, Ntwe, brutally murdered, suspected of being an informer for the apartheid security police. With his world crumbling around him, Otelo is forced to make a choice between the glamour and allure of surfing superstardom and seeking justice for his brother's death. On the momentous day when Nelson Mandela steps out of prison, Otelo's decision will echo with the resonance of a nation on the cusp of change, capturing a turbulent but pivotal moment in South African history. Sara Blecher's "Otelo Burning" is a beautifully crafted film that masterfully intertwines the joy of newfound freedom, the thrill of surfing, and the devastating realities of political conflict.
