One Summer (2021)

In the aftermath of his return from Iraq, Jack Armstrong, a man of versatile skills, succumbs to a mysterious illness. Sent home from the hospital, Jack expects to spend his last days under the gentle care of his loving wife, Lizzie. However, a cruel twist of fate sees Lizzie perish in a sudden car accident, leaving Jack behind. Miraculously, Jack recovers and, in an attempt to honor Lizzie's memory, decides to take their children - the fiery fifteen-year-old Mikki and the young Cory - on a summer vacation to Lizzie's childhood town of Channing. They arrive at their destination, a quaint beachside cottage with a lighthouse, a place Lizzie had lovingly referred to as her "palace". Their anticipation turns into disappointment as they find the once charming property in a state of disrepair. This discovery only adds to the burdens they carry, their hearts heavy with grief. Jack grapples with the dual role of being a father and mother, while also navigating a strained relationship with Lizzie's mother, Bonnie O'Toole. Bonnie, trying to cope with the loss of her daughter, becomes overly protective of the grandchildren she fears losing. Amidst the turmoil, Mikki battles teenage angst and the fear of her father falling ill again. As Jack sets out to restore the dilapidated cottage, he is drawn towards the non-functioning lighthouse. He decides to repair it as a tribute to Lizzie, guided by a spiritual manifestation of her that only he can perceive. In the midst of all this, Jack finds an unexpected solace in Jenna Fontaine, a local restaurateur who had moved to Channing four years prior with her son, Liam, to escape a failing marriage. As Jack and Jenna's bond deepens, a parallel connection seems to be blossoming between Mikki and Liam. However, Jack's ongoing spiritual encounters with Lizzie could complicate these newly formed relationships. The summer in Channing thus unfolds, promising healing, unexpected bonds, and a journey towards acceptance.
