In Paris' vibrant art scene, Philip Carey, a clubfooted aspiring artist, is confronted with the harsh reality of his middling talent. Heeding a friend's advice, he abandons his artistic dreams and uses his inheritance to enroll in a medical school in London. Here, he seeks a life of simplicity and comfort, far removed from the vibrant hues of his failed ambition. In his new life, Philip crosses paths with Mildred Rogers, an enchanting waitress at a local restaurant.
