Set in the heart of Korea, "My Tutor Friend" is a delightful fusion of drama, comedy, and a dash of romance, inspired by the real life experiences of Korean tutor Choi Soo-Wan. Both 21 years of age, born in March 1982, Choi Su-Wan (Ha-Nuel Kim) and Ji-Hoon Kim (Sang-Woo Kwone) find their lives unexpectedly intertwined when circumstances push them together. Su-Wan, a university sophomore, finds herself grappling with financial constraints when her father loses his job, and her mother's humble chicken frying business is barely enough to keep the family afloat.
In contrast, Ji-Hoon, a high-school student repeating his third year, is a notorious figure at Surim High School. Known for his brawls and charisma, he is a magnet for attention, particularly from his girlfriend Yang Ho-Gyung. Ji-Hoon's seemingly perfect life is marred by his academic struggles and a strained relationship with his parents, who shipped him off to the USA in his younger years for his education.
In a stroke of fate, Su-Wan's mother, a friend of Ji-Hoon's mother, sets up Su-Wan as Ji-Hoon's tutor. The deal? Help Ji-Hoon sit through two hours of study every day for three months, and she'll earn enough to cover her semester tuition. As Su-Wan embarks on this journey to bring discipline to Ji-Hoon's life, she must navigate the rough waters of his volatile school life, including a feud with "Lee Jong-Seo", the head of the school's triad group.
As pressure mounts from Ji-Hoon's father to send him back to the USA, Ji-Hoon is faced with a daunting challenge: improve his dismal average grade of 8.0 to a respectable 50.0 in the upcoming mid-term exam, or face the prospect of studying abroad again. With Su-Wan's help, will Ji-Hoon be able to rise to the occasion?
