Plot

In the fires of World War I, the famed English author Rudyard Kipling, renowned for his classic 'The Jungle Book', harnesses his substantial sway as a member of the War Office propaganda machine to secure a place for his almost 18-year-old son John 'Jack' in the military, despite the young man's impaired eyesight. Jack's enlistment in the Irish Guards is the fruition of a patriotic dream for father and son, yet it casts a dark shadow over his mother and sister, who view it as a living nightmare. After a brief whirlwind of officer training, Jack, brimming with youthful fervor, assumes command of a platoon and sets sail for the battlefields of France. However, the harsh reality of warfare soon engulfs him, and in the wake of his 18th birthday, his unit is decimated, and Jack is reported missing. In the face of this despair, his mother, Caroline 'Carry' Kipling, emerges as an indomitable force. She mobilizes Rudyard's influence and rallies half of England in a relentless quest for truth. Yet, when the truth finally surfaces, it is steeped more in blood and guilt than in glory, painting a stark portrait of the brutalities of war.
