Redmond Barry starts as a young rogue who understands the need to charm and beguile to get where you want in life. His escapades take him from his home in Ireland to a stint in both the British and Prussian armies and a run as a spy before being trained in the art of a confidence man. Obsessed with high social standing, Barry marries the rich Lady Lyndon as a way to climb his way up in high society. But while he has aspirations of life among the nobility, he knows that his wealth and status is inextricably tied to his wife.
