Murder with Pictures (1936)

In the shadowy underbelly of the city, notorious crime lord Nate Girard evades a murder charge, drawing the unyielding attention of Kent Murdock, a tenacious newspaper photographer. Amidst the charged atmosphere of a celebration thrown by Girard and his lawyer, Redfield, Murdock finds himself entranced by a mysterious woman who dares to confront the crime boss in full view. However, the evening spirals into chaos when his fiancée, Hester, arrives unexpectedly. Retreating to his apartment after a heated argument with Hester, Murdock is surprised by the same mysterious woman, who pleads for his assistance. As the police, led by Inspector Bacon, close in on her, Murdock acts as her shield, casting himself into a tangled web of crime and intrigue. The mystery woman, revealed as Meg Archer, is suspected of a murder that occurred in a highly publicized photographer's shoot involving Girard and Redfield. When the camera flash exploded, Redfield collapsed, dead, and Meg disappeared into the night. As the police round up the newsmen involved, Murdock discovers a photo plate hidden in a cap gifted to him by his competitor, McGoogin. The image captured from behind Redfield could potentially unravel the identity of the true killer. Despite mounting evidence against Meg, Murdock pledges to protect her. However, their quest for justice is thwarted as they are drugged, attacked, and their evidence stolen. In a twisted turn of events, Girard offers Murdock a bribe, insinuating his hand in the staged suicide of Meg's father. Driven by the need to clear Meg's name, retrieve the critical photo plate, and untangle himself from his engagement to Hester, Murdock steps into a dangerous game of cat and mouse. The plot thickens with the shooting of McGoogin, the unexpected appearance of a vengeful brother, and Meg falling victim to a bullet. Ultimately, Murdock must face Girard on his own, navigating a labyrinth of deceit, treachery, and murder.
