Plot

Niharika Chatterjee, a discontented wife and mother of a charming yet mute and deaf daughter, finds herself trapped in the confines of an unhappy marriage to public prosecutor Arindam Chatterjee. After a chance encounter at a party for physically challenged girls, she meets the reform-minded Inspector General of West Bengal's correctional cells, Mr. Brij Narayan Dutta. Intrigued by his ambitious plans to reform convicts, Niharika agrees to participate, insisting on a single condition - her husband must remain oblivious to her undertaking. Stepping into the ominous confines of the infamous jail teeming with hardened criminals, Niharika embarks on a mission to conduct a dance workshop. Inspired by the stirring rhythm of the inmates' lives, she decides to stage Tagore's dance drama, 'Balmiki Pratibha'. As she delves deeper into the project, she crosses paths with Yusuf Mohammad, a notorious inmate with a reputation that precedes him. However, unbeknownst to Niharika, the inmates harbor a secret escape plan. But as their lives intertwine with Niharika's through the medium of dance and drama, their conscience begins to stir and change. In the heart of darkness, will Niharika find the strength to liberate herself from the prison of an unhappy marriage? Will Yusuf Mohammad find redemption and freedom within the cold, hard walls of his literal prison? 'Muktodhara' is a poignant narrative of redemption and liberation, a story that explores the dualities of freedom and captivity both behind and beyond the bars.
