Plot

In the shadowy world of forgery and deceit, the US Treasury Department's Secret Service has been successful in tracking down a multitude of high-profile and dangerous counterfeiters. However, for an entire decade, one elusive case known as "880" continues to baffle them. Notorious for his amateurish counterfeit bills bearing the glaring typographical error "Wahsington", the suspect, dubbed Mister 880, has managed to escape capture. His strategy is simple yet effective; he circulates almost exclusively $1 bills, which are rarely scrutinized, and confines his activity to New York City. The sum of his monthly spoils is a humble figure - less than $50. In a bid to crack this puzzling case, the Secret Service ropes in Steve Buchanan, a seasoned agent from Los Angeles, hoping that his fresh perspective might bring about a breakthrough. As Steve immerses himself in the city, investigating duped merchants and tracing back the flow of fake cash, he unknowingly crosses paths with Mister 880 - a seemingly harmless elderly man named William 'Skipper' Miller. Skipper spends his counterfeit cash on whimsical second-hand trinkets, which he regards as his closest companions. When probed about his finances, he casually mentions support from his 'Cousin Henry', a cryptic reference to his homemade printing press and plates. The counterfeit cash re-emerges under Steve’s watch, this time linked to Ann Winslow, a French-English interpreter at the UN and a friend of Skipper. While Steve doesn’t suspect Ann as the elusive 880, he believes she could be the key to uncovering his identity. In a calculated move, Steve infiltrates Ann’s life, concealing his true intentions. However, as Ann discovers Steve's real identity, an unexpected romance begins to bloom between them. As their feelings deepen, the question arises: Will Ann recall the origin of the counterfeit bills? Will she inadvertently or intentionally expose Skipper to Steve before he makes the connection himself? And if Steve discovers Skipper's secret, what will become of their budding relationship? Ultimately, it seems, the final say may rest with Skipper himself.
