Plot

In the politically charged atmosphere of Santiago, Chile, in September 1973, American writer and translator, Charles Horman, and his liberal-minded wife, Beth, find their lives entwined in the tumultuous tapestry of a military coup. The couple, drawn to Chile due to its alignment with their own values, find their lives abruptly upended when the right-wing military orchestrates a coup overthrowing the elected left-wing government. Caught in the crossfire is their American friend Terry Simon, who is visiting the country, and together with Charles, they find themselves amid the chaos in Viña del Mar. As the coup unfolds, they come face to face with the covert American presence in the country, prompting them to document the unfolding political drama. However, when the airport closes, leaving them stranded, they take refuge in a high-profile American-friendly hotel after a tip from Kate Newman, an American freelance reporter. Desperate to reunite with Beth, Charles leaves Terry behind at the hotel, only to disappear mysteriously. Back in New York, Charles's conservative father, Ed Horman, a devout Christian Scientist, leaves his comfort zone to aid Beth in the desperate search for his son. Ed, initially dismissive of his son's liberal lifestyle, embarks on a journey that not only challenges his views but also reveals the complex layers of his son's life. Assisting them is US Consul Phil Putnam and US Naval officer Captain Ray Tower who, despite their promises, seem to be shrouding the truth. As skepticism grows, particularly from Beth who distrusts the American authorities, Ed's faith in his government begins to waver. Their relentless pursuit for answers uncovers a truth that threatens to shatter Ed's patriotism forever. "Missing" is a compelling narrative of a family's desperate search for their loved one amidst political upheaval, a journey that forces them to question their ideals and the very government they once trusted.
