Plot

In the vibrant heart of the Edo period, during the sweltering summer of 1814, a tale of artistic mastery and familial tensions unfolds in the bustling city of Edo. Our heroine is O-Ei, an adept painter and the eager apprentice of her father, the legendary Tetsuzo, who would later be known to the world as Hokusai. Renowned as a master of the ukiyo-e woodblock painting himself, Tetsuzo's fiery relationship with his daughter casts a long shadow over O-Ei's existence. Despite sharing the same fervor for art and the inherent talent of her father, she is forced to sideline her own ambitions to assist her father, a man engrossed in his craft to the point of indifference towards the world, his estranged wife, and his visually impaired younger daughter, O-Nao. Miss Hokusai paints a vivid picture of O-Ei's struggle to navigate the labyrinth of her life, where she is primarily consumed by aiding her tempestuous father, who cares primarily for his art and little else. From painting vivid, lifelike dragons to the seductively erotic shunga depictions, O-Ei's masterpieces remain unsung and uncredited, always overshadowed by the fame of her father. The tale ebbs and flows, much like Hokusai's iconic waves, until his death, where O-Ei's extraordinary talent remains an anonymous contribution to her father's celebrated legacy. The story of Miss Hokusai is a journey through art, tradition, and family bonds, etched with the unappreciated brilliance of a woman in a world that is yet to recognize her.
