Plot

Set against the backdrop of 1932 Macon County, Alabama, Miss Evers' Boys presents an unsettling tale of a medical experiment gone awry. The narrative is told from the perspective of Nurse Eunice Evers, an individual selected to facilitate a federal initiative called The Tuskegee Study of Untreated Blacks with Syphilis. Initially perceived as a noble endeavor, the study involved 412 men infected with the disease, promising long-term treatment. However, the reality was a chilling deception, with the men being administered mere placebos and liniments, while the true objective of the study was to compare the effects of the disease on black and white individuals. Evers, though aware of the treatment's deficiency, finds herself entwined in a web of duty and friendship, as many of the men in the study are her close acquaintances. A poignant touch to the narrative is the emergence of a performance group from within the study's participants, named "Miss Evers' Boys" in her honor. The heartbreaking tale of an unrequited romance with one of the men, who only receives actual treatment after joining the Army during World War II, further enhances the emotional depth of the story. The grim experiment continues unabated for four decades, until a Senate investigation is instigated. By then, only 127 of the original participants are still alive. Evers is called to testify before the Senate, revealing the chilling truth behind the infamous "Tuskegee Study." The aftermath of the investigation leads to significant changes in medical experimentation on humans, alongside treatment and financial compensation for the survivors. Miss Evers' Boys is thus an evocative exploration of a disturbing chapter in medical history, woven around the experiences of Eunice Evers and the men she served.
