Minesweeper (1943)

When the echoes of Japanese warplanes over Pearl Harbor shatter the peace, Richard Houston, a former Naval officer who had slipped into the shadows to escape the captivity of gambling debts, is drawn back into the world he abandoned. Assuming a new identity, he re-enters the U.S Navy, a prodigal son returning to a battlefield that has no room for past transgressions. Houston quickly finds camaraderie in the form of Chief Petty Officer "Fixit" Smith, a sturdy pillar of support who unknowingly ushers Houston into a vibrant new world that includes his charming niece, Mary. Amid the thunderous backdrop of war, a tender love story blossoms, setting the stage for a rivalry with Seaman Elliott Nash, another suitor for Mary's affections. As Houston ascends the ranks, reaching the position of Gunner's Mate alongside Nash, the specter of his past begins to stir. During a perilous diving operation, Nash saves Houston's life, inadvertently unearthing a watch inscribed with Houston's real name. The discovery sparks an investigation by Lieutenant Ralph Gilpin, threatening to expose Houston's secret. In pursuit of an engagement ring for Mary, Houston gambles with both his fortunes and time, overstaying his shore-leave. In a tragic twist, Smith, his steadfast friend, fills in for him and meets a fatal end when their minesweeper collides with a Japanese mine. Shattered, Houston reveals his true identity to Mary, contemplating a second desertion. However, the call of duty rings louder than ever when an emergency broadcast summons all Navy men back to base. Houston, propelled by a newfound resolve, returns and is assigned to a minesweeper with Nash. Together, they face the daunting task of identifying a new breed of Japanese mine lurking in the harbor, battling not just the enemy but the ghosts of their past.
