Born into a life bereft of parental guidance and marred by the loss of his mother to suicide, Zack Mayo finds himself devoid of a true sense of home or adulthood. His naval seaman father, stationed in The Philippines, reluctantly assumes guardianship, leaving Zack to grow into a solitary man. Despite his desolate upbringing, Zack makes the life-altering choice to enlist in the navy, not to follow in his father's footsteps, but to become a jet fighting officer. His journey begins with an intense thirteen-week training regimen at the air naval station on Whidbey Island, Washington.
