In the heart of a young, exuberant eleven-year-old boy named Nathan Perry, the joy of an impending gift of a dog from his doting parents is swiftly snuffed out by a brutal car accident. The fatal incident tragically shatters his family and propels Nathan into the cold embrace of Milwood, an orphanage held tightly under the iron-clad rule of Mr. Clemens. In the desolate environment of the orphanage, Nathan finds a glimmer of comfort and love in Judy, a compassionate social assistant.
