Plot

In the brisk autumn of 1937, Richard Samuels, a high schooler with a penchant for the dramatic, embarks on a day trip to the dazzling streets of New York City. His journey intertwines his life with Gretta Adler, a fellow creative spirit, sparking a bond fueled by their mutual aspirations in the world of arts. Fate, however, has a more extraordinary encounter in store for Richard—a chance meeting with the legendary Orson Welles at the iconic Mercury Theatre. Impressed by Richard's impromptu flair, Welles casts him as Lucius in his avant-garde adaptation of Julius Caesar. The cast, a constellation of Mercury Theatre stalwarts like Joseph Cotten and George Coulouris, finds itself under the indomitable rule of Welles. As the unofficial dictator, Welles' whim is law, with demands that span the spectrum, even delving into the risqué. Welles, a maverick disbelieving in conventions, keeps the opening date fluid, although rumors suggest a week to D-day. He is acutely aware that this production could either solidify his reputation or shatter it in the volatile theatre community. As the week progresses, Richard is shepherded by the production's versatile dynamo, Sonja Jones. Known as the Ice Queen, Sonja skillfully deflects unwanted advances, often humorously implying a liaison with Richard—a rumor that Richard fervently wishes were true. With opening night looming, Richard, having had a glimpse of Welles' mercurial nature, is faced with a daunting choice—whether the dream of acting in this production outweighs the potential costs. As the curtain rises, will Richard choose the spotlight, or will the shadows of doubt pull him away from the stage?
