Plot

Embarking on a sweeping journey through the tumultuous life of Marie Antoinette (1755-1793), this film traces her existence from her betrothal and marriage in 1770, culminating in her tragic end under the guillotine. Initially, she is portrayed as an isolated Hapsburg teenager in France, confined to a chaste life within the walls of the Dauphin's household - a place where the Dauphin himself yearns for a simple life as a locksmith. As Marie becomes entwined in the complex tapestry of French high society, she is guided by Orleans and her brothers-in-law. It is during this period that her naivety peaks, leading her into the enticing world of a Swedish count, Axel de Fersen, whose influence makes her question her frivolity. The film's narrative takes a dramatic shift in the second half, as Marie, successful in avoiding an annulment, ascends the throne, bears children, and proves herself a capable monarch. However, her reign is marred by scandalous events such as the infamous 'affair of the necklace' and the pervasive poverty plaguing France, which serve as catalysts for an imminent revolution. Facing her destiny with remarkable dignity, Marie Antoinette's story is a poignant exploration of a woman navigating the treacherous waters of power, responsibility, and societal expectations. This film immerses viewers in an era of grandeur and turmoil, making it a compelling watch.
