In the heart of Leah Townsend, a conflict-averse author and senator's daughter, brews a storm of discontent. Pledged to a life of pleasing others, Leah unwittingly becomes a doormat, sacrificing her happiness for the fleeting satisfaction of those around her. Her long-term relationship with Edward Krause, her college professor boyfriend, is a testament to her self-effacing nature, as she consistently relents to his predictable desires, ignoring her yearning for something more vibrant and fulfilling.
