Ruth Patchett, a slightly clumsy and generously proportioned housewife, is the pillar of a family that seems to be teetering on the edge of discontent. Married to the ambitious accountant Bob Patchett, Ruth continually strives to appease her husband and keep their home a haven of love. However, when Bob's eyes wander to the glamorous and successful romance novelist Mary Fisher at a social gathering, the fragility of their home life is sharply revealed. Bob and Mary embark on a clandestine love affair, their passion burning brightly in the shadows of Ruth's dedicated homemaking. Ruth, though initially choosing to turn a blind eye, is eventually pushed to her limits when Bob's indiscretions become too hard to ignore during a family dinner with Bob's parents. In a confrontation that shatters the illusions of their marital bliss, Bob coldly enumerates his assets: his home, his career, his family, and most importantly, his freedom.
