Love and Death (1975)

In the vast expanse of Russia, amidst a turmoil of love and war, resides Boris Grushenko, a pseudo-intellectual, who harbors an unrequited affection for his equally pseudo-intellectual cousin, Sonja. Despite their shared intellectual pretensions, Sonja's heart is ensnared by Boris' brother, Ivan, whose affections seem to elude her. Driven by a desperate need to marry, Sonja sets her sights on anyone but Boris, even if her chosen husband falls short of perfection, warranting the need for a suitable lover in addition. Meanwhile, Boris' tranquil existence is shattered as he, a pacifist turned reluctant soldier, is thrust into the Russian Army to combat the impending invasion by Napoleon's forces in Austria. Even as the specter of war looms large, Boris' thoughts meander back to the terrain of love and longing, with Sonja remaining an elusive dream. Despite their divergent journeys, fate weaves a complex tapestry, intertwining their paths once again. Their shared quest for an ideal spouse and lover takes a dramatic turn when they conspire to assassinate Napoleon.
