On a luxury cruise sailing from Europe to New York, Michel Marnet (Charles Boyer), a debonair French playboy and future heir to a colossal American fortune, finds himself captivated by Terry McKay (Irene Dunne), an enchanting American ex-nightclub singer seeking solace in the arms of her doting boyfriend. As the ship cuts through the ocean, a clandestine love affair blossoms between the two, their connection as profound as the sea that carries them. Despite the intoxicating allure of newfound love, the reality of their circumstances looms in the horizon. Michel is promised to a wealthy fiancée, while Terry remains devoted to her supportive beau.
