Plot

Lisztomania (1975) is a riotous exploration into the tempestuous life of Romantic composer and piano maestro, Franz Liszt (Roger Daltrey). In this audacious spectacle, the audience is invited into a world teeming with rampant phallic symbolism, while being treated to an intimate look into Liszt's complex "friendship" with his contemporary, Richard Wagner (Paul Nicholas). The narrative commences in a whirlwind of passion and talent, capturing the fervor of Liszt's piano performances, which send his teenage followers into a frenzy. Amidst this captivating chaos, Liszt navigates the labyrinth of his scandalous affairs, a testament to his rampant hedonism. In an interesting twist, Liszt is drawn towards the enigmatic Princess Carolyn of St. Petersburg (Sara Kestelman), who invites him into her world. Succumbing to their shared passion, they elope, only to have their nuptial dreams dashed by the Pope's (Sir Ringo Starr) edicts. This leads the maestro on a path of self-discovery, as he embraces a monastic life as an abbé, in a quest to reconcile his debauched past. However, the allure of his former life proves tenacious. The women who once swarmed him and the influence of Wagner constantly pull him back into the vortex of excess. Liszt's struggle to overcome his free-living lifestyle forms the crux of this enthralling narrative, offering a glimpse into the duality of genius and decadence. Lisztomania is a whirlwind ride through the life of a virtuoso, replete with music, passion, and a healthy dose of irreverence.
