Plot

Set in the heart of Liverpool during the Great Depression, "Liam" is a poignant tale of childhood, religion, and societal prejudice. As the city's shipyard grinds to an unexpected halt, young Liam and his elder sister Teresa find their lives irrevocably altered. Their father, a former shipyard worker, is rendered jobless, forcing the family into the harsh grip of poverty. Liam, a tender eight-year-old on the cusp of his first Holy Communion, is a frequent recipient of the church's fervent sermons, brimming with fiery warnings and moral judgments. His young mind grapples with fear and confusion, his stutter worsening with each mounting concern. Meanwhile, thirteen-year-old Teresa finds employment with the Jewish family that formerly owned the now-closed shipyard. Her innocent world is disrupted as she unwittingly becomes an accomplice to the lady of the house's clandestine affair. As the city simmers with xenophobia and religious bias, their father falls under the influence of Fascists, who foster resentment against the cheap Irish labor and Jewish proprietors. A single, reckless act of violence involving a Molotov cocktail threatens to bring their world crashing down, culminating in a catastrophic climax that tests the resilience of innocence and family bonds. "Liam" is a compelling exploration of the human spirit, forever marked by the scars of prejudice and poverty.
