Plot

In the tumultuous era of the French Revolution, Jean Valjean (Richard Jordan), a destitute woodcutter, is condemned to five years of incarceration in Toulon for the petty crime of stealing bread to sustain his starving family. Persecuted by the ruthless Javert (Anthony Perkins), Valjean's desperate attempts to escape only add to his sentence, extending his torment to a harrowing nineteen years. Upon his release, he finds himself shackled by society, branded a thief and shunned by all, save for the magnanimous Bishop Myriel (Claude Dauphin). However, succumbing to old habits, Valjean pilfers the bishop's silverware. Captured and hauled back to face his benefactor, a twist of fate awaits him. The bishop, in a grand act of mercy, insists the silver was a gift and even adds two candlesticks to the lot. His soul redeemed by the bishop's benevolence, Valjean vows to live a life of integrity. Under the alias of Madeleine, Valjean transforms into a successful entrepreneur and beacon of prosperity, utilizing prison-learned skills to manufacture black beads. His honorable ascent to the position of town Mayor is threatened when his past tormentor, Javert, assumes the role of Chief of Police. Valjean's life takes another dramatic turn when he crosses paths with the impoverished Fantine (Angela Pleasence), wrongfully accused of prostitution. His compassionate intervention not only saves her but also unveils the existence of her daughter Cosette (Caroline Langrishe), whom Fantine has entrusted to a couple's care. However, as Javert discerns Madeleine's true identity, a battle of wills ensues, threatening to shatter the new life Valjean has painstakingly built. As the relentless Javert closes in, Valjean finds himself at the precipice of a daunting decision.
