King Creole (1958)

Caught in the throbbing heart of New Orleans, Danny Fisher (Elvis), a young man with a voice as golden as the city's famed jazz, finds himself balancing on the knife's edge of survival. Struggling to support his over-qualified, underemployed father and bachelorette sister Mimi, Danny constantly juggles multiple odd jobs, a task that distracts him to the point of missing his graduation, not once, but twice. The King Creole nightclub, an oasis amid the city's chaos, offers Danny a chance to utilize his gifted voice. However, this haven is one of the few places untouched by the smarmy crook Maxie Fields (Walter Matthau), a mobster with his claws sunk deep into the city's underbelly. Maxie, charmed by Danny's talent, wants him for his own seedy joints, putting the young crooner in a perilous position. Whilst working as a busboy in one of Maxie's establishments, Danny crosses paths with Ronnie (Carolyn Jones), the mobster's mistress and a fading singer herself. Their encounter sparks a dangerous connection, igniting an unpredictable flame amidst the city's simmering tensions. Despite his desperate efforts, Danny finds himself drawn to quick routes to wealth, entangling with hoodlums eager to capitalize on his melodic prowess. Amid this tumultuous life, the innocent Nellie (Dolores Hart) enters like a breath of fresh air. A simple dime store angel, she falls for the complex Danny, offering him a glimpse of a straight life, away from the shadows of the underworld. As Danny's world begins to close in on him, he's handed a steady gig, providing him a chance to shake off his past. But can he escape Maxie's clutches without selling his soul?
