Plot

In the heart of the ancient Shimousa Province, Japan, a humble acupuncturist named Soetsu transformed into a moneylender, lending his hard-earned savings to the samurai Fukami. The echo of his ill-fated decision would reverberate for decades when Fukami, steeped in madness, murders Soetsu, disposing of his body into the haunting Kasane Swamp—a place of eerie legends where the departed never resurface. However, with his dying breath, Soetsu unleashes a curse upon Fukami, driving the samurai into a deadly frenzy that consumes his own family. Fast forward twenty-five years, the streets of Edo become the backdrop for an ill-starred love story. Shinkichi, Fukami's handsome son, finds his heart entangled with Oshiga, Soetsu's daughter, who now plies her trade as a singing teacher. Despite the societal implications and Oshiga's notorious reputation, their love story begins to trace a poignant arc. But when Shinkichi's eyes wander towards Ohisa, one of Oshiga's students, jealousy rears its ugly head. In a fit of rage, Oshiga is struck by Shinkichi, leading to a fatal infection that seals her fate. As death encroaches, she follows in her father's footsteps, cursing Shinkichi and promising to haunt him and any woman he dares to love. The tale of "Kaidan" thus unfolds, weaving a tale of love, betrayal, and vengeance from beyond the grave. Set against the backdrop of 19th century Japan, it takes the audience on a journey through the uncanny, where the lines blur between the living and the dead, the victim and the cursed.
