Jaal (1986)

In the heart of India, Shankar Verma endures a life of poverty with his mother, Shanti, after being abandoned by his father, Sathpal, who is beguiled by the allure of a courtesan named Meenabai. As time weaves forward, Shankar, now a man, finds himself torn between two captivating women, the affluent Sunita, daughter of the mighty Bhanu Pratap Singh, and the humble Madhu, daughter of the modest Hariya and Tara. Both women are under the enchanting illusion of his love. As fate would have it, Shankar is hired by the enigmatic and wealthy Amita, who tasks him with the clandestine mission of spying on Bhanu Pratap, his sons Balram and Jackie, and his associate, Kedar. Drawn into this web of espionage, Shankar diligently reports his findings to Amita. However, as he immerses himself in village gossip, he uncovers the dark shadows of his father’s past. Sathpal was not only a betrayer who deceived Bhanu Pratap but also the murderer of Bhanu’s brother, Shashi. This revelation prompts Shankar to seek answers from his father, only to discover that Sathpal breathed his last six years ago in Central Jail. Undeterred, Shankar embarks on a quest to unearth the fate of the enigmatic Meenabai, only to find her brothel consumed by flames and her whereabouts a mystery. Unbeknownst to him, the elusive Meenabai still exists, concealed behind the guise of Amita, using the unsuspecting Shankar as her pawn in a game of vengeance against Bhanu Pratap.
