In the heart of Kindle County, Illinois, resides 61-year-old Rozat Sabich, better known as Rusty. As the esteemed chief appellate court judge, he balances a grim personal life with his professional responsibilities. His loveless marriage to Barbara Sabich, a woman battling her own psychiatric demons, is held together by the presence of their son, Nat Sabich. Following dutifully in his father's footsteps, Nat is currently a law clerk on the verge of becoming a lawyer. The Sabich family's intricate web of secrets and lies is rooted in Rusty's past infidelity, which resulted in a murder accusation that still haunts him two decades later. Rusty's past indiscretion turned deadly when his mistress was found murdered. Acquitted of the crime, Rusty is still viewed with suspicion by district attorney, Tommy Molto, who sees Rusty's escape from justice as a stain on his career.
