If I Were a Rich Man (2019)

In the heart of Gijón, in the Principality of Asturias, north of Spain, we find the intriguing tale of Santi, a man in his thirties whose life seems to be measured by a series of unfortunate events. A year after being fired from the factory he worked at and on the verge of a divorce from Maite, his wife of nine years, Santi finds himself penniless and living in his van, longing for a job that never appears on the horizon. His only solace lies in the company of his best friends, Marcos, a contented family man, and Pedro, a single gas station employee who still lives with his mother. Amidst his turmoil, Santi attends an alumni meeting where he discovers that his old classmate, Mario, has become a successful man and Maite's new boss at the Todoymás supermarket. After a sour visit to the lawyers to finalize the divorce, Santi, in a desperate attempt to alter his luck, buys a lotto ticket. The following day, to Santi's astonishment, he discovers that his ticket has won the grand prize of 25 million EUR. Eager to claim his winnings but fearing the public exposure, he absconds from the bank, unexpectedly drawing the attention of the bank manager, Damián. Damián advises Santi on managing his newfound wealth, but also reveals a harsh truth: Maite is entitled to half of his winnings due to their marital agreement. Resolute not to lose half of his fortune, Santi embarks on a secret spending spree of luxurious indulgences, all while maintaining the pretense of his impoverished state. In a misguided act of generosity, Santi lands a job interview for himself with Mario through Maite. As he attempts to improve the lives of Marcos and Pedro using his hidden fortune, chaos ensues. His efforts to win back Maite also prove futile. However, a twist of fate arrives when Damián discloses Mario's true intentions with Todoymás.
