Plot

As the first whispers of the Korean conflict flutter through the air of 1950, the small, quintessential American town of Greenhill teeters on the edge of uncertainty. The Greer family, the backbone of this tight-knit community, run a family-operated contracting business. Eldest son Martin Greer, a seasoned veteran from World War II and the business's primary engineer, stands firm amidst the growing turbulence. His younger brother, Jack, with a trick knee and an infatuation for the enchanting Carrie Turner, seems likely to dodge the draft. The ghosts of the past haunt the Greers: the memory of Riley, brother to Martin and Jack, who fell in World War II, and their father, Thomas Greer, a proud World War I serviceman. As the fear of war grows, the town looks to Martin, begging for letters of indispensability for their young men, a plea he resolutely refuses. The tranquility of life as usual is shattered when the Korean conflict swells into full-blown war. Cold War paranoia seeps into the heart of the community, the draft board casting long shadows over the young men's futures. Jack, now in the crosshairs of the draft board, finds himself in a precarious position, especially as he courts the beautiful daughter of the draft board chairman. The Greer family must now grapple with their beliefs about war, this war in particular, and how it would change if their loved ones, or they themselves, were directly involved. A thought-provoking character study, "I Want You" captures the pulsating heartbeat of an era, examining the American attitudes of the 1950s and the tumultuous impact of war on a single family and their community.
