I Love You to Death (1990)

In the heartland of Tacoma, Washington, the charismatic and ever-smiling Joey Boca (Kevin Kline) leads a life that is the envy of many. He and his devoted wife, Rosalie Boca (Tracey Ullman), are pillars of their community, running a bustling pizzeria that serves as the neighborhood's beating heart, and owning an apartment building where they are beloved by their tenants. All seems idyllic in this slice of American life, until one stumbles upon Joey's secret - a compulsive adulterer, he weaves a web of infidelity unbeknownst to his trusting wife. Rosalie's world shatters when she discovers Joey's indiscretions, her initial shock metamorphosing into a formidable resolve. With Catholicism barring the door to divorce, she decides on a tantalizing alternative - Joey must die. In this audacious plan, she enlists the help of her fiercely protective mother Nadja (Dame Joan Plowright) and Devo (River Phoenix), the pizzeria's busboy who harbors a silent love for Rosalie. The trio, however, find themselves hilariously ill-equipped for the grim task of murder. They soon realize they require professional assistance, leading them to the eccentric, drug-addled cousins Harlan (William Hurt) and Marlon (Keanu Reeves). Despite their enthusiasm for the lucrative assignment, their lack of experience in the killing game proves a stumbling block. While they devise a series of calamitous assassination attempts, involving everything from poison to gunfire, Joey remains blissfully unaware, his life hanging by a thread he can't see. As the absurdity of their endeavors escalifies, it becomes apparent that the truth, in all its complex glory, may be the one thing that can save them all.
