I Know Where I'm Going! (1945)

Joan Webster, a 25-year-old woman from a middle-class background, is resolutely ambitious and fiercely independent. Her life's mission is to attain a life of wealth and luxury, a quest that leads her to the doorstep of Sir Robert Bellinger, a wealthy industrialist, and the owner of the company she works for, Consolidated Chemical Industries. Joan accepts Robert's marriage proposal, envisioning a life steeped in opulence on the Hebrides' Isle of Kiloran, which Robert owns. With her wedding destination set, Joan embarks on a journey from her home in Manchester to Kiloran, a trip that serves as a sampler of the high life she craves, with every need meticulously catered to. However, her journey is halted at the Isle of Mull due to severe weather conditions, preventing her from crossing the waters to Kiloran. Stranded in a hotel in Tobermoray, a town close to the Port Erraig, Joan crosses paths with Torquil MacNeil, a navy man on his leave, also bound for Kiloran. As they wait for the weather to clear, Joan learns that Torquil, not Robert, is the true laird of Kiloran, though he lacks the financial abundance that Robert possesses. Torquil's world is a stark contrast to Joan's dreams, filled with the contentment of the locals despite their modest means. As Joan and Torquil's paths intertwine in their shared wait, Joan finds herself grappling with her lifelong dreams. Despite her stubborn pursuit of wealth, she begins to question the true nature of her ambitions. As days turn into nights, she finds herself drawn to Torquil, challenging her preconceived notions of happiness. The question remains, will Joan let go of her meticulously planned future for a new dream, one that is as unpredictable as the Scottish weather, but well within her reach?
