Plot

In the year 1890, amidst the cobblestone streets of Christiania, we find Pontus, a penniless writer, teetering on the edge of desperation and destitution. His world, confined to a low-budget boarding house, is an echoing reminder of his plight. With an eviction notice looming over his head, starvation gnawing at his bones, and an empty wallet, his only solace is an unwritten article, a beacon of hope in the gloom. Stubbornly clinging to his pride, Pontus refuses to accept charity or advance payments. He paints a facade of nonchalance, insisting he needs no handouts, even as his gaunt appearance betrays his true state. His integrity, untarnished by his dire circumstances, compels him to return an incorrectly given change, further deepening his financial abyss. As hunger starts to erode his sanity, he teeters between reality and delusion, his world punctuated by vivid daydreams birthed from the absence of sustenance. Amidst this haze, he crosses paths with the enchanting Ylajali and her sister, sparking a flutter of romance inside his weary heart. When he isn't cursing the world for his misfortunes, he finds fleeting moments of joy, displaying an astonishing resilience to maintain his dignity and pride. An opportunity arises when the editor of a local newspaper shows interest in his writing, asking him to rewrite his article in a language more suited to their readers. Simultaneously, Ylajali shows interest in him, offering a chance at love. Despite being battered by defeat and suffering, Pontus continues to dream, holding onto the hope that his bleak existence will transform, and he will emerge triumphant.
