Elizabeth, a microbiologist, confesses to her coworker Matthew in San Francisco's Department of Public Health that her boyfriend has not been acting like himself. Matthew begins to talk to other people who have a similar story about their loved ones. He is convinced that there must be a rational explanation, but soon he witnesses something that undeniably convinces him that for some reason, they are all being replaced by creatures that look exactly like them. Elizabeth, Matthew and their friends must try to put stop to it, but it may already be too late.
