In the thrumming heart of her thirties, Hillary Burns finds herself navigating life's constant quest for parental approval, particularly from her discerning mother, Meredith Burns. The key to this elusive approval, she believes, is a marriage to the perfect man. She thinks she's found this in Jason King, a successful lawyer, whom she plans to introduce to her family during a Thanksgiving reunion. However, life deals Hillary a double blow when she simultaneously loses her part-time job as a newspaper writer and her engagement to Jason, who prioritizes his career over their relationship. Guided by her best friend Sophie's advice, Hillary plunges into the world of online dating, not for love, but to find a stand-in for Jason. She can't face her family alone, particularly as her sisters appear to be the epitome of their mother's expectations. Hillary stumbles upon David, an actor wrestling with his own life's uncertainties. She convinces him to take on the role of Jason, promising him the one thing he's missing - an acting job. The ruse is a challenge for David, who must convincingly play a lawyer for four days under the scrutiny of Hillary's politician father, Roy Burns, who consistently seeks legal advice. The charade is further complicated by Hillary who, in an attempt to salvage her wedding plans, treats David as if he were the real Jason, harboring the hope that Jason may return. As the weekend unfolds, Hillary's carefully constructed facade begins to crumble, leading her to revelations about her mother, her seemingly perfect sisters, and her own desires. All the while, an unexpected guest lurks on the horizon, threatening to upend her meticulously laid plans and potentially rendering everything she thought she wanted obsolete.
