Plot

In the throes of World War II, the quaint town of Gander, Newfoundland transforms into a bustling hub, serving as the pivotal junction for numerous flights traversing between North America and the European Theater. Amid this whirlwind of action, 16-year-old Terry Fleming wrestles with his aspirations and responsibilities. He yearns to be part of the vibrant life at the Gander Airlines Hotel—the epicenter of the town's activity—where movie stars and GIs become momentary residents, and stories of romance, war espionage, and thrilling USO engagements unfurl. Terry finds himself drawn towards the lively Laurie Dwyer, his neighbor who works at the American base, promising him a job, perhaps as a waiter. Yet, his heartstrings pull him back home, where his mother Violet, a woman sharing his passion for the entertainment of the era, battles the crippling clutches of diphtheria. The house stands quarantined, a stark contrast to the spirited world outside. With his father Frank's loving yet perplexed acknowledgement of the special bond between mother and son, Terry navigates this delicate balance. He seeks solace in his dreams, conjuring up vivid tales of the hotel's happenings—stories about glamorous stars, local girls seeking escape through fleeting affairs with GIs, and secret war intrigues. These dreams, however, are not mere flights of fancy, but a refuge from his fears, and a testament to his resilience. As the war rages on beyond Gander, and the specter of death looms within his home, Terry finds himself at a crossroads. Will he continue to seek comfort in his boyhood fantasies, or will he face life's harsh realities? The choice is his to make in the turbulent heyday of a world at war.
