Scarred by the ravages of the Vietnam War, Jack Dunne's life has become a cycle of fleeting freedom and relentless captivity within the sterile walls of a New York VA Hospital. Deemed "unhinged" due to the lingering effects of combat, Jack has been in and out of the hospital since his return from Vietnam four years ago, his escapes aided by the camaraderie of his fellow ward patients, veterans who fought alongside him in the war. Driven by the promise of a brighter future, Jack embarks on an ambitious cross-country journey, fueled by meager funds and a relentless spirit. His mission, a heartfelt odyssey, threads through the heart of America, making stops in Sedalia, Missouri, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and ultimately Eureka, California. His aim is to reconnect with his former comrades-in-arms, hoping to establish a worm farm for fishing bait with them. On this journey, Jack's path intertwines with that of Carol Bell, a young woman on a restless pilgrimage to Kansas City, Missouri. Having abruptly left her fiance just four days before their wedding, she is a runaway bride seeking a temporary escape. Initially, Carol finds Jack's company more of a nuisance than a comfort. However, with her funds running low and her return to New York looming, she finds herself depending on Jack, first financially, then emotionally. As they traverse the sprawling American landscape together, Jack and Carol face a series of predicaments. The looming threat of Jack's return to the VA hospital should the authorities get involved keeps them on their toes. With each challenge, they lean more on each other, forming a bond that goes beyond mere companionship. As Carol becomes Jack's last beacon of hope when his comrades abandon his dream, they discover the depth of their emotional connection, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
