Plot

In the midst of the notorious migrant jungle of Calais, the illustrious Laurent family battles their own jungle of secrets, desires, and incipient dementia. George Laurent, the elderly patriarch, is reluctantly cohabiting his opulent manor with his twice-wed son, Thomas, and his industrious daughter, Anne. As George battles the encroaching fog of dementia, his memories of better days serve as a poignant counterpoint to the escalating turmoil within the family. Anne, divorced and emotionally withdrawn, commands the family's affluent construction empire. However, her reign is marred by a catastrophic workplace accident, a result of her son Pierre's negligence. This calamity adds another layer of complexity to the family dynamics, pushing the already strained relationships to their breaking point. Simultaneously, the unexpected hospitalisation of Thomas' ex-wife due to a mysterious poisoning brings his aloof 13-year-old daughter, Ève, into the manor. Now sharing a home with her father and his new wife, Anais, Ève is thrust into the heart of the family's intricate web of secrets. As the Laurent family bear witness to the end of George's life, they are ironically juxtaposed against the backdrop of the refugee camps in Calais, a stark reminder of the social disparity in their world. The Laurents' lives intertwine with their unspoken and disreputable desires, forming an unusual and unsettling alliance. Amid this maelstrom, it becomes evident that some secrets are larger and more disconcerting than others. In "A Happy End," Oscar-winning director Michael Haneke delivers a compelling social critique, encapsulating the Laurents' bourgeois existence, their interpersonal drama, and the context of their privilege. This film is a haunting exploration of a family's decline paralleled with society's pressing issues, a narrative that lingers long after the curtain falls.
