Plot

In the idyllic yet flawed hippie commune where he was raised, Victor (Mark L. Young), a young man, begins to question the so-called Utopian principles that govern their lives. His mother (Andie MacDowell), a financial pillar of this commune, has fallen under the spell of Insley (Rutger Hauer), a cunning guru. Insley employs a technique called "running", a hypnotic practice used to seduce women, ensnaring them to relinquish their bodies and worldly possessions to him. The return of Victor's childhood sweetheart, Becky (Hanna Hall), to nurse her gravely ill father, stirs up haunting premonitions of her death in Victor. He becomes desperate to rescue both himself and Becky from the clutches of this exploitative cult. However, the commune's adults, bewitched by Insley's doctrine of free love, turn a blind eye to the destructive behavior of their offspring, a grim consequence of their premature exposure to sex and drugs. To finance his escape, Victor ventures into selling marijuana, only to find himself embroiled in a fierce rivalry for Becky's heart. He is ensnared in a web of complexity as he grapples between extracting money from his mother, who is completely under Insley's control, navigating the turbulent world of his drug-infused friends, and staying to save Becky as she spirals into chaos. The movie "Happiness Runs" is a riveting journey of a young man's desperate struggle to break free from a misguided Utopia, confronting love, loyalty, and survival.
