Golden Door (2006)

In the dawning years of the 20th century, nestled in the rugged landscapes of Sicily, lives Salvatore - a humble widowed farmer burdened by poverty, yet fueled by the dream of a better life. He decides to take his entire family, his old mother included, on a formidable journey across the vast ocean, to the land of promise - America. Just before they set sail, their path intertwines with that of Lucy, a seemingly British woman yearning to return to the States. Shrouded in mystery, Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore fondly calls her, seeks to secure a marriage before reaching Ellis Island in New York. In a twist of fate, Salvatore becomes her chosen one. Once they land on the shores of Ellis Island, their dreams are put to the test. Quarantined and subjected to rigorous examinations, they find the golden door to America is not easily opened, especially for uneducated Sicilian farmers. They must navigate the harsh realities and labyrinthine bureaucracy of the immigration process, their destiny precariously held in the palms of the impassive custom officers. Golden Door paints a vivid portrait of the immigrant experience, a tale of hope and hardship, of resilience in the face of adversity. It's a journey of a Sicilian peasant and a beautiful Englishwoman, both unprepared for the trials that lie ahead, yet bound by a shared dream - can they step through the golden door to the America they envision?
