God's Army 2: States of Grace (2005)

In the backdrop of Venice, California, Elder Farrell and Elder Lozano, a pair of Mormon missionaries as different as night and day, find themselves navigating the treacherous waters of faith and redemption. Farrell, a sensitive soul from Utah, is passionate about the scriptures and the pursuit of potential converts. He meticulously follows the mission rules, his heart set on his divine calling. Lozano, on the other hand, is a former gang member turned believer, his conversion taking place amidst the trials of gang violence and hospital recovery. With only three weeks left of his mission, Lozano's interests lie more in dribbling a basketball than in teaching the gospel. In a city where danger lurks around every corner, the duo find themselves in the midst of a drive-by shooting by a Latino gang. Lozano's past and present collide as he aids Carl, a wounded African American gang member. Carl's curiosity is piqued by his savior, leading him down the path of redemption and baptism. Simultaneously, the elders discover Louis, a homeless preacher, half-dead on the street. From his makeshift pulpit on the beach, Louis is a voice crying in the wilderness, his past sins rendering him an exile. The missionaries' path intertwines with Holly, their enchanting actress neighbor, who is entrusted with Louis's care. As Carl embraces his spiritual rebirth, Holly and Louis reveal their own stories of isolation from loved ones. Lozano, through his interactions with Carl, discovers a newfound missionary fervor. However, Farrell finds himself in a moral quandary, battling feelings for Holly that challenge the very rules he has faithfully upheld. Their lives become a complex tapestry of faith, redemption, and personal struggle, each seeking their own state of grace.
