Girlfriends (2021)

In the vibrant heart of Barcelona, Catalonia, 27-year-old Marta finds her life as an artistic photographer under threat. Employed by a prestigious British firm, she is suddenly dismissed when the company opts for a London relocation, and her promise of an exceptional photograph remains unfulfilled. To add to her woes, her roommate and fellow photographer, Lili, departs to join a thriving artist commune in an industrial gallery. Left alone and penniless, Marta reluctantly embraces her humble beginnings and returns to her birth city, Cornella, located a mere 13.2 kilometers from Barcelona. There, she reunites with old friends Bea, Desi, and Soraya, in addition to her parents Juan and Maricarmen. Feeling like a stranger in her own life, Marta spends her days reminiscing about the past, serving in Soraya's bar while deceitfully persuading Lili that she's pursuing her dreams in a lesser-known studio in Stockholm. Marta's aspiration for an illustrious life beyond her working-class roots leads to frequent clashes with her friends and her mother, who can't help but mother her still. However, her fantasy world shatters when Lili unexpectedly arrives in Cornella, revealing Marta's deception and causing a rift between her and her friends. This setback, however, presents Marta with an opportunity not just to reconcile with her past and true identity, but also to realize her potential as the artist she always aspired to be. With a new job at Ramón's photostudio, specializing in celebratory events, she finds herself in the midst of life's simple yet profound moments, a setting that might just inspire her long-awaited 'greatest photo.'
