In the sun-kissed realm of Southern California's surfing society, Frances Lawrence and Jeff Stevens, fondly known as Gidget and Moondoggie, are ready to ride the wave of their blossoming romance into the shores of matrimony. After years of education and a brief stint as a first-grade teacher, Gidget decides to surrender her independent life in favor of a shared destiny with Moondoggie, who has just been decommissioned from the Air Force and is armed with an engineering degree.
The promise of a lucrative job at World Wide Dynamics lures them to the structured, company-owned town of Wood Lake, Florida. Trading their long-drawn engagement for wedding rings, they embark on this new journey together. Yet, the bliss of their short-lived honeymoon soon fades as they navigate the challenging currents of married life and the dominating influence of World Wide Dynamics.
Moondoggie, constantly laboring to impress his boss, Otis Ramsey, finds himself ensnared in the corporate rat race, leaving Gidget to experience the company-owned town's life largely alone. The town lives under World Wide's shadow, where conformity is king, and the social strata are as unyielding as the company-provided furniture and color-coordinated houses.
Gidget's free-spirited nature rebels against this regimented existence. Her attempts to disrupt the rigid structure of Wood Lake and World Wide Dynamics, however innocent, could jeopardize Moondoggie's job and their future together. Meanwhile, Moondoggie, drawn into the vortex of corporate ambition, is determined to provide for his family, oblivious to Gidget's discomfort with their cookie-cutter life.
