Plot

Frances Lawrence, affectionately known as Gidget, and her sweetheart Jefferson Matthews, or 'Moondoggie', have been inseparable since their adolescent years. As they surf the waves of Malibu, their lives seem pinned together like a perfect postcard. Now, as Gidget turns eighteen and prepares herself for college, she persuades her parents, Russ and Dorothy, to let her embark on an adventure to the romantic city of Rome. Accompanied by her friends Lucy and Libby, Moondoggie, and his college buddies Judge and Clay, they are chaperoned by Judge's eccentric Aunt Albertina - a woman more interested in her own pleasures than keeping an eye on the young group. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Gidget, her father enlists his old war-time friend and current magazine writer, Paolo Cellini, to covertly look out for her during the trip. Paolo, performing a delicate balancing act, pretends to write a story about American tourists while fulfilling his obligation to Russ, without revealing his true purpose or his connection to Gidget's father. The idyllic Roman holiday takes a tumultuous turn when a young, captivating Italian guide named Daniela enters the scene. The boys, including Moondoggie, are instantly charmed, triggering a wave of jealousy in Gidget. As tensions rise, Gidget finds herself drawn towards the suave and charismatic Paolo, oblivious to his secret mission, his friendship with her father, and his blissful married life back home. As their Roman escapade unravels, Gidget and Moondoggie's fairytale bond is threatened, facing the classic trials of youthful love and the allure of new attractions. 'Gidget Goes to Rome' is a roller-coaster ride of emotions, filled with love, jealousy, and the thrill of discovering oneself amidst the backdrop of an enchanting city.
