In the shivering heart of an icy road near Chicago, tragedy strikes the lives of a family as Marianne is claimed by a fatal crash. The aftermath leaves Joe and his two daughters, the teenage Kelly and young Mary, grappling with the void left behind. As summer beckons, a ghost from Joe's academic past provides an escape route, arranging a teaching job for him in the picturesque Italian city of Genova. In this foreign land, the family embarks on a journey of transformation under the sun-kissed skies of Italy. The summer unfurls a tapestry of experiences for the girls before school commences: Kelly, on the brink of womanhood, immerses herself in the local youth culture, her exploration of club and beach life igniting the flames of her sexual awakening. Mary, however, is a lone wolf, her young heart burdened by the guilt of her mother's death. While the girls fill their days with piano lessons and Mary expresses her turmoil through her drawings, the ethereal presence of their mother weaves in and out of their lives. Mary claims to see and converse with her mother's spirit, a haunting echo of their loss that pervades their new home. Throughout it all, Joe stands as a silent pillar, his recurring question to his daughters, "Are you okay?", echoing his struggle to navigate their shared grief.
