Plot

In the gloaming of the late 19th century, Paula Alquist (Ingrid Bergman), a promising opera singer, finds herself entranced by the charming Gregory Anton (Charles Boyer), the accompanist at her Italian singing lessons under the esteemed Maestro Guardi (Emil Rameau). Their impassioned love story soon culminates in marriage, and Gregory persuades Paula to abandon the Italian landscapes for the bustling streets of London. Unbeknownst to him, Paula is the heir to a house in London's 9 Thornton Square, bequeathed to her by her famed opera singer aunt, Alice Alquist, whose unsolved murder still casts a pall over the dwelling. Convinced she can overcome the haunting past for love, Paula agrees to live in the house where she discovered her aunt's lifeless body many years ago. But as she settles into her new life, peculiar occurrences disrupt the tranquility. Pictures inexplicably vanish, mysterious footsteps echo in the night, and gaslights dim untouched. Paula's mind becomes a labyrinth of confusion, as she grapples with forgetfulness, imagined hostilities, and the eerie sense of losing her grip on reality. All the while, Gregory insinuates subtly that her health is deteriorating, fostering her isolation and heightening her fears of impending madness. But the enigma of 9 Thornton Square doesn't go unnoticed. An elderly neighbour, Miss Thwaites (May Whitty), with an appetite for intrigue, and Brian Cameron (Joseph Cotten), an admirer of the late Alice Alquist, sense the uncanny happenings behind the house's closed doors. As Paula battles to hold onto her sanity, the intentions of her new husband, the only one who regularly leaves the house for nightly walks, come under suspicion. Will the truth emerge from the flickering shadows of deceit, or will Paula be forever ensnared in the chilling game of gaslight?
