Joe's managed to survive and thrive as a professional killer for so long explicitly because he is so professional. But when he arrives in Bangkok for four last jobs before he retires, he makes the critical and first time mistake of breaking his own rules. Joe normally uses errand boys on his jobs that he then kills, but he's finding himself attached to the latest kid he's working with. That sudden opening of his heart probably has something to do with the fact that he's falling in love with someone as well. But his emotional involvement could cost him his life.
